Northelbian, founded in 1977 with the three traditional diocesan towns in in Hamburg, Lübeck and Schleswig, the Northelbian church office in Kiel and the Northelbian synod conference venue in Rendsburg with 27 church districts, 642 parishes, the Northelbian services and the church social welfare work.
From Ansgar to the Northelbian church
The christianisation of Northelbian started with Ansgar. It was a long way from Vicelin and Johannes Bugenhagen to the Northelbian church, since 1977, one of the youngest German national churches.

Bishop Gerhard Ulrich
The Church Council represents the Northelbian Church in church and public life. The Church Council has its seat in the Church Office in Kiel. Ten members of the Synod elected from its midst are members of the Church Council, as well as the two bishops. Bischop Gerhard Ulrich is the chairperson of the Church Council at present.
The Northelbian Synod is the “parliament” of the Northelbian Church

Synodpresident Hans-Peter Strenge
There are 140 members of the Synod, among them 69 lay people, who are mainly elected by the 27 Church District Synods. Some are also elected by the pastors and the employed staff, 12 synod members are called by the Church Council. The Synod is run by a president and two vice-presidents, at the present time the President is Hans-Peter Strenge.
The Bishops Collegiate
The Northelbian Church (NEC) is divided into two Dioceses ("Sprengel"): Hamburg and Lübeck on the one hand and Schleswig and Holstein on the other. A Bishop is responsible and has the spiritual leadership for each Diocese.
